Piano moves raise questions a general moving company can’t really answer. Here’s what Chattanooga customers ask us most, from pricing to how we handle Lookout Mountain driveways.

Piano Moving Questions Chattanooga Asks Us Most, Answered

How is a piano move priced — hourly or a flat number?▾

We quote flat-rate by piano type — upright, baby grand, grand, or concert grand — built off a phone walkthrough or a few photos you send over. That number goes on the written quote and it's what you pay, no surprise line items added on move day.

I put down a deposit — what happens if I need to cancel or push the date?▾

The deposit is $175 and it's refundable. It comes straight off your final invoice, so it's really just prepaying part of the job, not an extra fee. Cancel or reschedule with at least 72 hours' notice and you get the full $175 back.

Are you actually licensed and insured, or is that just a website claim?▾

Yes — we carry Tennessee household goods mover registration for in-state jobs and federal US DOT and MC operating authority for anything crossing a state line, plus $1M in cargo coverage on every piano we move. We're happy to send a certificate of insurance before move day if your building or venue requires one.

What parts of the Chattanooga area do you actually cover?▾

All of Hamilton County — East Ridge, Red Bank, Signal Mountain, Soddy-Daisy, Collegedale, and Ooltewah included — plus regional hauls out to Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta, and Huntsville.

Will you move other furniture along with the piano, or is it pianos only?▾

Pianos only. Every truck, crew, and piece of rigging equipment we own is built around moving pianos safely, so that's the one thing we do — we're not set up to also load a couch or bedroom set on the same trip.

Is it your own crew showing up, or do you farm the job out to a subcontractor?▾

Our own crew, every time. All 11 of us — including the two crew chiefs who run the rigging — are direct employees, not day labor or a subcontracted outfit. The people who quote the job are the ones who show up for it.

How does the estimate process actually work?▾

Tell us the piano type and describe the pickup and drop-off — stairs, elevators, tight doorways, that kind of thing — over the phone, or just send a few photos. Office manager Denise Callahan turns that into a written flat-rate quote, usually the same day, before anything gets scheduled.

Does weather in Chattanooga ever delay or complicate a piano move?▾

Summer humidity off the Tennessee River and the freeze-thaw swings we get in winter are both hard on a soundboard and tuning pins, so we plan padding, crating, and truck loading around whatever the forecast is doing that week rather than treating every move the same. If a storm system is rolling through the valley, we'll call ahead about rescheduling instead of forcing a move in bad conditions.

On a long-distance move, is it the same crew the whole way, or does the piano get transferred to someone else?▾

Same crew, same truck, door to door. One of our teams loads it in Chattanooga, drives it, and unloads it at the destination — we don't hand it off to a different carrier partway through the route.

How do you handle the old, narrow staircases in North Shore and downtown Chattanooga?▾

Those turn-of-the-century shotgun-house staircases and walk-ups weren't built with a piano in mind, so we walk the route in advance — measuring landings, turns, and doorway widths — and bring boards and rigging sized for a tight stairwell rather than forcing a standard approach. Lead rigger Terrence Wade handles most of the trickier staircase and spiral-staircase jobs personally.
